The Long History of Hot Water Bottles
Ah, the comforting embrace of a hot water bottle on a chilly night – there is nothing quite like it. But have you ever wondered about the origins of this toasty invention? Let’s embark on a journey through time and unravel the fascinating history of hot water bottles!
Our story begins thousands of years ago, in ancient civilisations, such as the Egyptians and 1st century BC Athens, when early hot water bottles were crafted using mostly clay. These early contraptions were filled with hot sand or water and were cherished for their ability to provide warmth on the coldest of nights.
Fast forward to the 16th century and a metal bed warming pan became a must have item for any chilly household.
Arriving at the Victorians, the hot water bottle became a very popular item, now being made from from a type of ceramic called 'stoneware'.
As the centuries rolled on, hot water bottles continued to evolve. In 1903, Croation Engineer Slavoljub Penkala developed the first rubber hot water bottle. This change brought a revolution, making hot water bottles more durable, efficient and affordable.
By the 20th century, hot water bottles continued to be a staple for many homes around the world now with comforting and insulating covers.
In recent years, hot water bottles have taken on new shapes and sizes, such as mini and long shapes.
While the hot water bottle has evolved the goal has remained the same: to use the power of hot water to provide an affordable and long-lasting solution in the cold.
We have tried to add to the continued evolution at CosyPanda by developing a new range of unique covers made from highly insulating, sustainable materials.
